Allred Unit guard gasses hung prisoner, ranking unit guard orders to leave him hanging
By Jason Renard Walker
Despite the seasonal deaths and murders at Allred Unit’s maximum security prison, just outside Wichita Falls, Texas; prison guards are still responding to these incidents as if no remedial training or reprimands were ever dished out to curtail wrongful deaths. Though, chances are, none were.
After I arrived back to this unit following an 18-month hiatus and brief stays at four different units; in less than two weeks, two Hispanic prisoners in 4 Building’s F-Pod hung themselves, several days apart.
On May 24th 2021, a 23-year-old man known only as “Bully”, was found hanging in 70 Cell by a guard during the afternoon count. Witnessing prisoners stated that the guard (name unknown) spent several minutes trying to convince another guard to open the cell door so he could gas the man. He eventually emptied an entire canister of OC pepper spray through the hole-y screen on the cell door, despite the hanging man’s unconscious state and purple body.
According to witnesses, a female ranking sergeant named Vazquez arrived, choking on gas, and suggested that they let the man hang until the Office of Inspector General (OIG) decided whether life sustaining treatment was necessary.
At this point, the entire cellblock reeked of chemical agents.
The pod was evacuated and prisoners were ordered to go on the passive rec yard adjacent to the pod.
A white prisoner, who was still visibly shaken by the experience days later, recounted seeing blood spurt out of every crevice and hole in the man’s body; including eyes and ears, after the hanging device was removed, causing the man to convulse. This same prisoner was tediously questioned, and then locked up in one of 11 Building’s solitary cells, for speaking to his grandfather about the two hangings and the gassing, according to his own assertion.
The second prisoner, known as Rubin, hung himself from the second tier during the afternoon. By coincidence, a guard walked by my cell as the emergency call about this hanging blared on his walkie-talkie. Fortunately, this prisoner was saved by a team of inmates and a guard. From my 11 Building solitary cell, I could see the other prisoner being carted to the infirmary through a window across from my cell.
Allred Unit is already facing lawsuits concerning the 2019 murders of Joseph Oguntodu who died next door to me in April, and Deandro Hamilton, who was killed several months later. Both prisoners were housed in Allred Unit’s Close Custody wings during their deaths.
James Roberts of Scott Palmer Law, P.C. is representing the family and estate of Joseph Oguntodu in a Civil Rights violation lawsuit.
Hamilton’s wife Porsha is still looking for answers as to what led to his death.
I’m in the process of another unit transfer, after being locked up on my arrival here.
Dare to struggle, dare to win! All power to the people!
